This Friday, October 12, 2007, Ireland's 32 (San Francisco) hosts a crackerjack team of enlightened redneck hippies and the psychedelic cowboy sounds of the Dedicated Maniacs. This is some serious psychedelic twang featuring songs by New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Band, Dylan and some Texas honky-tonk.

The show is free.

"Throckmorton" will open with their unique style of old timey sounds. Then look for 2 full sets by the Dedicated Maniacs.

The Dedicated Maniacs, featuring:
Mike Berry (guitar, Left Coasting)

The Old West

I suppose the topic of the Old West is part of the discussion in this tribe as Cowboys and Cowgirls got their beginning with the pioneers who went west in the Old West in wagon trains. These pioneers were Cowgirls and Cowboys by default. Many went on to farming, ranching, and raising livestock. Anyways, I enjoy reading about these early pioneers who were the forfathers of the modern day Cowgirls and Cowboys. I find reading the diaries of these people exciting, learning how they lived day to day back then. The hardships they faced, the good times, and of the terrain they were crossing.

How about you? What do you think of the old west?

Homesteading?

Is anybody here doing homesteading / hobby farming?

http://directory.google.com/Top/Home/Rural_Living/Homesteading/

How much self-sufficiency is too much? Would anyone here actually make their own soap? What about plowing a field with horses instead of using a tractor? Sewing your own clothes?

I like some of their ideas, but I think I would keep some modern conveniences... such as the computer for one. And I certainly can't see myself sewing my own clothes :)

If you like online horse games, check out this one!
http://www.hajinc.com/clickit.php?affid=1109
The really unique thing about it is that it uses real color genetics to decide the color of horses you breed. Its better than lots of other games I've tried, with a very cool owner and an active membership.

Haystack Life - the perfect song for us cowgirls and cowboys

Hi guys and gals!

I'm an urban cowgirl who's new to Tribe and blogging, so I hope it's okay for me to introduce myself here in this way and to recommend a great song for us cowboys and cowgirls, whether we're in town or out on the range.

It's by one of the great loves (Some may say, obsession!) in my life - Shawn Harvey, singer-songwriter (roots, country & western, rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, blues etc) - titled "HAYSTACK LIFE", from his album "In The Hills" on the Kissy Music label.

Take a look at the music video for "Haystack Life" at:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-ueOTsxH29g
There's an mp3 clip of this song and others from the album at:
www.shawnharvey.com - Music/Videos page

Hope you like the music as much as I do!
Look forward to hearing from you.

A Fun Poem

This is more a toast than a full blown poen; however, I hope you like it as much as I do. ;o)

Here's to the horses
Here's to the saddles
Here's to the girl's that ride them

When I die,
May my hide be tanned
And made into a saddle

So I can be between the two things
I love the most.

(And if possible make sure my tattoos are in the appropriate place on the saddle.) ;o)

Here's a poem a friend has performed many times.

Ben Quinters, a horse trainer up in Montana, has performed this poem several times when I have been present. The last time was two years ago at the Heber City Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair. It's one of my favorites.

"Purt Near"
They called him "Purt near Perkins,"
for unless the booger lied,
He'd purt near done most everything that he ever tried.
He'd purt near been a preacher
and he'd purt near roped a bear:
He'd met up with comanches once
and purt near lost his hair.
He'd purt near wed an heiress
who had money by the keg,
He'd purt near had the measles,
and he'd purt near broke his leg.

He'd purt near been a trail boss,
and accordin to his claim,
He'd purt near shot Bill Hickock---
Which had purt near brought him fame:
He'd purt near rode some broncs,
upon which no one else had stuck.
In fact he was the feller
who had purt near drowned the duck!

Now mostly all the cowboys on the lazy SB spread,
They took his talkin with a grin
and let him fight his head.
But one named Tom Maginnis
sorta told it to him rough.
You're ridin with an outfit now,
where purt near aint enough.
We tie our lasso ropes to the horn,
an what we catch we hold.
An purt near is one alibi we never do unfold!
In fact, right now I'll tell you
that no word I ever hear
Sounds quite so plain damn useless
as that little pair "Purt Near".

Now thats how ol" Tom Maginnis
laid it out upon the line,
And like a heap of preachin talk,
It sounded mighty fine.
But one day Tom Maginnis
while a ridin out a lone
He lamed his horse and had
to katch some neighbor nesters roan
to ride back to the ranch on.
But somewhere along the way
A bunch of nesters held him up,
and there was hell to pay!

Tom claimed he had'nt stole the horse....
Just borrowed it to ride.
Them nesters hated cowboys,
and they told him that he lied.
They cussed him for a horse theif
and caught him with the goods.
They set right out to hang him
In a near by patch of woods.
They had poor Tom surrounded,
with guns all fixed to shoot.
It looked like this pore cowboy
sure had heard his last owl hoot!!

They tied a rope around his neck
and throwed it o'r a limb
And Tom Maginnis purt near knowed
this was the last of him.
Then suddenly a shot rang out
from some where up the hill!
Them nesters dropped the rope an ran
like most nesters sometimes will
when the bullets start to wizzin.
Tom's heart lept up with hope
to see ol Purt Near Perkins
ridin' toward him at a lope.

Looks like I purt near
got here just in time,'ol Perkins said,
"To see them nesters hang you!"
Toms face got kinder red.
"You purt near did!" he purt near grinned.
"They purt near had me strung!
You're lookin at a cowboy
that has purt near just been hung!
And also one that's changed his mind....
For no word ever said,
Can sound as sweet as "Purt Near"
When a man's been purt near dead!"

"I just wanna be a gay cowboy..."

Nope, not me - just quoting from the Jude Christodal song (music video: http://www.vidlit.com/gaycowboy/ ) "Gay Cowboy".

Now, I hope I'm not stirring the old proverbial, as my grandma used to say, but I was just wondering (as a straight, 'city cowgirl' - Hillybilly Hops at my local pub are the closest I come to anything like the real west or a rodeo) what the opinions of people in this tribe are.

Obviously, the recent 'gay cowboy' thing has been triggered by "Brokeback Mountain" (but I'll leave talking about that to somebody else. I'm quite bored already with all the talk about the talk about the film) What I want to talk about isn't about who's gay-positive, who's homophobic and who could care less, but about something like feelings of ownership or protectiveness about the imagery, themes, fashions and lifestyle (even that sold by the adman and glossy magazines).

For instance, opinions of, say, country people who ride, ranch manage, farm and so on, to those of us who just buy into the fashions and the bits and pieces: gay guys who do the Marlboro Man look and 'attitude', me with my cowboy boots and plaid skirt and Navajo belt, C&W and alt country people who've never got their hands dirty or their skin burnt because they never go out of their apartments, offices or restaurants.

Is there the same kind of feeling as (what I've read) ranch hands and farmers etc had 'in the old days' to dude ranch visitors?

I know that I get really ticked off by the macho posers (- and no guys, I'm not taking a swipe at you: there are women in this bunch too) who drive around London, the inner city and not even the outer suburbs, for pete's sake, in their 4X4s with bullbars, horns that'd be better on a big Mac, country decals and so on. OK, so sometimes I just laugh and think it's a bit like the nerdy geeky guy thinking he's a cool sophisticated playboy because his car hasn't got a top on it and he's wearing sunglasses and fake tan.

For me, it's a bit like dressing up without being formal, trendy, slavishly following this season's must-have clothes and cosmetics - and it just goes together so well in a crowd of others like me who are into rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, country, skiffle, bluegrass - Yeah, it's exotic and foreign and not really my heritage and tradition - But anyone who knows about British country tradition will know it's not a good look or scene. You're either the local yokel, village peasant who does Morris dancing or the toff in tweeds.

Better stop before I get into a rant (off topic!) about the class system. But I guess you know what kind of discussion I'm hoping to open up.

How do you who are 'real' cowboys and cowgirls feel about your heritage or parts of it being nabbed and commercialised, cashed in on and maybe diluted or trivialised?

'Nuff for now

Bye
Olga

Fave cowboy/western artist

Who are your favorite cowboy/western artists?
From the "old guys", that aren't around any more, my favorite would have to be Frederick Remington. I don't really like his style (I like a lot of detail), but I really like WHAT he painted. It was the true west.
Newer artists would be Tim Cox, Gordon Snidow and Claire Goldrick. Lots of detail and beautiful colors.
I also like Edna Harper, she does pencils and pen & inks. Very talented and a true ranch girl. She lives what she draws.

What's up with the price of western clothes nowdays (or am I just cheap)? You've got to be rich to afford a shirt. $40 or $45 dollars for a plain button down shirt, give me a break.
Also, do working cowgirls really wear hiphugger, bell bottomed jeans and big, ugly rhinestone belts that cost $200.00? I think not.
Who sets these trends? The country music stars?

i think seeing the dixie chicks on the last leg of what they said was their last big tour, summer 03, was a great thing. the show they put on was massive, but the music was purely good. it was easily one of the best shows i've seen. but i love seeing performers that i like in as small a setting as possible. i have the chance to do that at events in and around calgary stampede.

Hi folks.

I see a theme in the messages so far comparing old with new in homesteading and music.

Like anything, there are pros and cons. Why choose. When you can listen to a new artist with the quality of Alan Jackson, or even Kid Rock, and mix it with the lived in sound of Merl Haggard, or the silk sounds of Lefty Frezzell, why chose. dig 'em all.

As far as Homesteading ways, I am an ol fart and have lived stuff like heating an iron on the wood stove, slopping the pigs in the morning and milked the cows before breakfast, Jingled the horses in the frost, built barbwire fence for countless miles... Let me tell you. Non of it is glamorus.

To be honest, I would pick the tractor over the mule any day because of the effeciency, but I would be happy to hop on the horse to bring in the cattle instead of a quad runner.

The choice is personal and would, I imagnine change with every one who needed to choose.

Lets keep it all.
Introduction

Where are you from? What makes you a cowgirl/cowboy? Tell us a little about yourself...

I love anything country: music, dancing, riding horses, and best of all, wide open spaces. I am still taking riding lessons, but hope to own a horse in the near future. I live in the Sacramento area, so wide-open spaces are becoming harder and harder to find. ;)

I started this tribe to connect with people who share my love of country. If you have anything you want to share; thoughts, views, we would love to hear it. Also, don’t forget to post and introduction.

Welcome!!

For those of you who like western clothing and riding

Hi all country and horse enthusiasts! I am a 4th year fashion design student and want to create a line of riding wear geared around western style for everyday riding etc. I am not looking to do show clothes as of yet. My idea is to create clothes that you can wear riding and around the barn that are not your old jeans and boyfriends work shirts. Something that when you leave the barn you will still feel comfortable wearing out for coffee or for a drink at the pub after a long day. What would you want in your riding wear? how do you want it to function? what styling do you prefer? what is your favourite aspect of western wear? all input will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Old vs. New

OK, so it's an old debate, but thought I would throw it out there. Old versus new country. Which do you like better? Why?

I lean more toward the new country. I think the performers are more entertaining, and the songs offer more than just love gone wrong themes.
