I suppose the topic of the Old West is part of the discussion in this tribe as Cowboys and Cowgirls got their beginning with the pioneers who went west in the Old West in wagon trains. These pioneers were Cowgirls and Cowboys by default. Many went on to farming, ranching, and raising livestock. Anyways, I enjoy reading about these early pioneers who were the forfathers of the modern day Cowgirls and Cowboys. I find reading the diaries of these people exciting, learning how they lived day to day back then. The hardships they faced, the good times, and of the terrain they were crossing.
How about you? What do you think of the old west?

Re: The Old West
09/28I love reading journals of the early pioneers~ or better yet the first europeans to find the trails west ( originally started by mustangs & native Americans because neither strayed to far from water) that later became stagecoach routes, pony express routes & eventually trails for pioneers. they kept documents (because they were funded by the banks) & journals, an interesting source of information. I am stunned & amazed at what these humans went through. I went to the library & looked up the topic " early trails west " and so much info came up~
another good read focusing mostly on horses & their role in the west is "The Mustangs" by J. Frank Dobie.

Re: The Old West
09/12I am a 6th generation cowgirl. I don't ever remember not being on a horse. We work hard to preserve the "cowboy way". It's a tuff life sometimes, but well worth it. People say our breed is almost dead, but don't count us out yet. I'm glad to hear that there are people like you still out there. And to the people that think we don't matter.......who raises the cows that provide the beef you eat, leather for your shoes, carseats, etc.?????
